Idol Size for Home Temple: How Big Should Your Murti Be

By Devsabha Team 7 min read

Quick summary

  1. Most home mandirs suit a murti of 4 to 12 inches.
  2. Measure the inside height of your mandir; keep the murti at half to two thirds of it.
  3. Small wall mandir 3 to 6 inch, wooden mandir 6 to 9 inch, pooja room 9 to 18 inch.
  4. Many vastu guides say up to about 9 inches at home; follow your family custom.
  5. Check the base size and the shelf strength too, not only the height.

For most home temples, a murti between 4 and 12 inches tall is the easy choice. That is the right idol size for home temple shelves, wall mandirs and small wooden mandirs. Go bigger, 12 to 18 inches, only when you have a proper pooja room or a wide platform, and keep idols above 18 inches for big pooja rooms and temples.

The real answer, though, comes from your own mandir, not from a fixed number. A 9 inch murti looks right on one shelf and too big on another. So measure first, then choose. It takes two minutes, and below we show you how.

A simple rule that works: the murti, with its crown and base, should fill about half to two thirds of the inside height of your mandir. The space above is for a garland, the bell and a clear view of the face.

Murti size chart for a home mandir

Here is a simple chart. The heights in the last column are real murtis from our store, so you can picture the size.

Where you keep the murtiEasy heightExample from our store
Small wall shelf or wall mandir3 to 6 inch4.1 inch Murugan set, 5.3 inch Tirupati Balaji
Wooden mandir on a table or cupboard6 to 9 inch8.5 inch Ganesh, 9 inch sitting Hanuman
Large wooden mandir or marble mandir9 to 12 inch12 inch Saraswati
Pooja room with a platform or wide shelf12 to 18 inch14.5 inch Durga on lion
Big pooja room, temple, or a main idol on the floor18 inch and above30 inch Radha Krishna pair

Use the chart as a start. Your mandir’s inside height and depth decide the final size.

Measure your mandir in three steps

  1. Inside height. Measure from the floor of the mandir (where the murti will sit) to the lowest point of the roof or arch above it. Not the outside height of the mandir.
  2. Inside depth. Measure from the back wall to the front edge. Keep space in front of the murti for a diya, flowers and a small plate. A murti that sits right at the edge can fall when you clean or do aarti.
  3. Width. If you will keep two or three idols side by side, add up their base widths and leave a little gap between them.

Now take the inside height and keep the murti at about half to two thirds of it. For example, if the inside height is 15 inches, a murti of 8 to 10 inches will look right and still leave room above the crown.

At 4.1 inch, this Murugan with Valli and Devasena fits even a narrow wall shelf.

Which size fits which kind of mandir

Wall shelf or small wall mandir (3 to 6 inch)

Flats with little space usually have a wall mandir or one shelf. Small idols are the right pick here. They are light, so a wall shelf can hold them, and you can lift them easily for abhishek or cleaning. A family set like a Ram Darbar also comes in small sizes, so the whole darbar fits in one place.

4.5 inch brass Ram Darbar with Ram, Sita, Lakshman and Hanuman under an arch with kirtimukha
A 4.5 inch Ram Darbar: Ram, Sita, Lakshman and Hanuman ji on one base, so it needs very little shelf space.

Wooden mandir on a table or cupboard (6 to 9 inch)

This is the most common home mandir. A 6 to 9 inch murti is clearly visible from where you sit for pooja, and the face and details show well. Check the inside height of your wooden mandir first, because many have a dome or a carved top that makes the inside lower than it looks.

Pooja room with a platform (9 to 18 inch)

When you have a separate pooja room, a bigger murti can be the main idol, with smaller ones around it. At this size, check that your shelf or platform is strong and flat, because brass is heavy. Check the weight on the product page before you order.

Big pooja room or temple (18 inch and above)

Large murtis are usually kept on a floor platform or in a temple. Plan where it will stand before it arrives, and keep two people ready to lift it. Bigger murtis also need a bigger space for daily cleaning around them.

Is there a vastu rule for idol size?

Many vastu guides say a murti for a home mandir should not be taller than about 9 inches, and some say even smaller. The belief behind it is simple: a big murti is traditionally believed to need full daily pooja, the way it is done in a temple, and that is not easy in every home.

Different families and different pandits follow different rules here, so there is no one number for all. If your family has a custom, follow it. If you want a bigger murti for your pooja room, ask your family pandit once. From our side, the practical rule above (half to two thirds of the inside height) always gives a neat look.

Keeping more than one idol: get the sizes in balance

  • Keep the main deity of your home a little bigger, in the middle.
  • Idols kept side by side look best when their faces come at almost the same level. A small idol can sit on a small stand to bring it up.
  • Do not crowd the mandir. Many families keep only one murti of each deity.
  • Leave room in front for the diya, so the flame is not too close to the murti or the cloth behind it.

Before you buy a murti online

  • Read the height on the product page and hold a measuring tape at that height in your mandir. Photos can make a murti look bigger or smaller than it is.
  • Check the base size too, not only the height. A wide base needs a deep shelf.
  • If a murti has an arch or a big crown, measure your mandir up to its lowest point inside, so the top does not touch.
  • Want a size we do not have? We can make it for you. See our custom brass idols page.
