Quick summary
- First check the finish: plain brass, antique, black lacquer coating or stone work.
- Plain brass: lemon with salt or tamarind paste, then rinse and dry fully.
- Black lacquer coating and stone work: only a soft dry cloth or brush, never lemon or vinegar.
- After abhishek or aarti, wipe off milk, oil and diya smoke the same day.
Here is how to clean brass idols at home: rub a plain brass idol with half a lemon dipped in salt, or with tamarind paste, wait a few minutes, rinse it with water and dry it fully with a soft cotton cloth. But stop for a moment before you start. Lemon, tamarind and vinegar are only for plain brass. An idol with a black lacquer coating or with stones fixed on it needs a dry cloth and nothing else.
Most damage happens when a good cleaner is used on the wrong finish, so this guide starts with the finish.
First check which finish your brass idol has
- Plain brass (golden, shiny): the whole idol is the same yellow metal. All the home methods below are safe for it.
- Antique finish (brown or dark on purpose): the dark look is part of the design. Wipe it with a dry cloth and a little mild soap water only; a lemon scrub would make it patchy.
- Black lacquer coating: the black parts are a coating on top of the brass. Lemon, tamarind, vinegar and polish powder can take the coating off. Use only a soft dry cloth.
- Stone work: coloured stones are fixed on after the chisel work. Water and pastes can get behind the stones and loosen them. Use a dry soft brush and a dry cloth.
Not sure? Look at the product page or the bill. If the idol is black and brass together, or has stones, treat it as the gentle kind.
Four home methods for plain brass
Pick one. All of them use things from your kitchen. Work on a plate or an old towel, and keep the idol away from the mandir cloth while you clean.
1. Lemon and salt
- Cut a lemon in half and dip the cut side in salt.
- Rub it on the dull parts in small circles.
- Leave it for 5 to 10 minutes.
- Rinse with lukewarm water and dry every corner with a soft cotton cloth.
2. Tamarind paste
- Soak a small ball of tamarind in warm water for 15 minutes.
- Mash it into a thick paste.
- Spread it on the idol and leave it for 10 minutes.
- Rub with a soft brush, rinse and dry fully.
3. Baking soda and vinegar paste
- Mix one spoon of baking soda with one spoon of vinegar. It will fizz; wait till it settles.
- Apply the paste and leave it for 10 minutes.
- Scrub gently with a soft cloth or an old toothbrush.
- Rinse with warm water and dry completely.
4. Flour, salt and vinegar
Mix one spoon each of flour, salt and vinegar into a paste. Apply it for 5 minutes, rinse with warm water and buff it dry. This one is good for flat parts like the base and the back.
Very dark or green spots
Green or almost black spots on plain brass need a stronger step. Soak the idol in equal parts white vinegar and salt for 20 to 30 minutes, then scrub the spots with a soft brush, rinse and dry. Repeat once if needed. Always try any paste on a small hidden part first, for example under the base.
Never soak an idol with a black lacquer coating, stones, or painted parts.
Cleaning after pooja: milk, oil and diya smoke
- After abhishek: milk, curd and honey left on brass turn it dark in a day or two. Pour clean water over it, then dry it at once.
- Oil and ghee: wipe with a cloth dipped in warm water with a drop of dish soap, then a dry cloth.
- Diya smoke: keep the diya a hand width away from the idol. Wipe black smoke marks the same evening, before they set.
For idols with black lacquer coating or stones, do the abhishek on a separate small murti, or wipe the big one with a damp cloth and dry it straight away.
How often to clean a brass idol
- Dust it every week with a soft dry cloth or a makeup brush.
- Clean plain brass with one of the methods above once a month, or when it looks dull.
- Give it a full clean before big festivals like Diwali or Ganesh Chaturthi.
- Keep the mandir dry; damp walls and bathrooms nearby make brass go dark faster.

Questions people ask
Can I use a brass polish powder or liquid?
Yes, on plain brass. Follow the label, rinse well and dry. Do not use it on black lacquer coating, antique finish or stone work.
Can I wash a brass idol with soap and water?
A plain brass idol can be washed with mild soap water. Dry it fully, inside every gap, or water marks will show. Do not wash idols with stones.
Why does brass turn dark or green?
Air, moisture, sweat from hands and oil from pooja react with the metal. A dry place and a weekly dusting slow it down a lot.
Should I rub oil on a brass idol?
A drop of coconut oil gives shine for a few days, but it also catches dust. If you use it, wipe off the extra with a dry cloth.
Clean it gently, dry it well, and your brass murti will look the way it did on the day it came home.
