Ganesh Idol Trunk Direction: Left, Right or Straight for Home

By Devsabha Team 5 min read

Quick summary

  1. Most homes keep a Ganesh idol with the trunk turned to Ganesh ji's own left (Vamamukhi).
  2. Ganesh ji's left is YOUR right when you face the murti: check the tip of the trunk.
  3. A right trunk Ganesh is traditionally kept in temples, as it is believed to need strict pooja.
  4. A straight trunk is rare and many families keep it at home too.

Ganesh idol trunk direction, in short: for a murti at home, most families choose one with the trunk turned to Ganesh ji’s own left. This is called a left trunk Ganesha, or Vamamukhi. A straight trunk is also kept at home by many families. A right trunk Ganesh is traditionally kept in temples, because it is believed to need strict daily pooja.

One thing confuses almost everyone: whose left? It is Ganesh ji’s left, not yours. When you stand facing the murti, his left is on your right side. So a left trunk Ganesh idol has the trunk bending towards your right hand.

Simple check: stand in front of the murti. If the trunk bends towards your right hand, it is a left trunk Ganesh, the one most homes keep.

How to check the trunk in 10 seconds

  1. Stand right in front of the idol, or open the front photo on the product page. Side photos can confuse you.
  2. Find where the trunk starts, between the eyes, and follow it down to the tip.
  3. See which way the tip turns. Towards your right hand means it is turned to Ganesh ji’s left. Towards your left hand means it is turned to Ganesh ji’s right.
  4. If the tip goes straight down, or only curls a little in the middle, it is a straight trunk.

Seen from the front, this trunk bends towards your right. That means it is turned to Ganesh ji’s left.

Look at the tip, not only the middle. On many murtis the trunk first swings one way and then the tip curls back. The tip is what people go by.

Left trunk (Vamamukhi)

This is the Ganesh you see in most homes. The left side is traditionally linked with the moon, calm and family life. That is why it is believed to be easy to please with simple daily pooja: a diya, a flower and a little prasad.

Right trunk (Dakshinamukhi)

A right trunk Ganesh is traditionally seen as a very powerful form. The famous Siddhivinayak temple in Mumbai has a right trunk murti, and so does the Siddhivinayak temple at Siddhatek, one of the Ashtavinayak temples. Because this form is believed to need strict rules of pooja every day, many families keep it only in temples.

Straight trunk

A straight trunk is not seen often. Many families are happy to keep it at home. If you like a straight trunk murti, it is fine to choose it as per your own family custom.

Before you buy a Ganesh idol online

  • Open the front photo, not only the side or close-up photos.
  • Use the 10 second check above on that photo.
  • Look at the base too. Some murtis show his mouse at the base, which is a nice detail for a home mandir.
  • Match the size to your mandir shelf, so the murti does not look squeezed.
  • If you want a right trunk or straight trunk Ganesh and cannot find one, ask us. We also make murtis to order: see how our custom brass idols are made.

Questions people ask

Is a right trunk Ganesh bad for home?

No, it is not bad. It is only believed to need stricter pooja every day. If your family already has a right trunk murti and you do pooja with love, keep it. If you are not sure, ask your family pandit.

Ganesh ji ki sund kis taraf honi chahiye?

For the ghar ka mandir, most families keep a murti with the sund turned to Ganesh ji’s left side. Remember: when you face the murti, his left is your right.

Is left trunk my left or Ganesh ji’s left?

Ganesh ji’s left. Facing the murti, that is your right side. Many people mix this up, so always check the tip of the trunk from the front.

I got a right trunk Ganesh as a gift. What should I do?

There is no need to give it away or put it in water. Many families keep a gifted murti with respect in the mandir and do simple pooja. If you want, ask your pandit about your family custom.

Does the trunk direction matter for a wall hanging or a car idol?

Most people follow the same custom and pick a left trunk Ganesh for wall hangings, car dashboards and gifts too.

Does a bigger murti need different rules?

No. The trunk custom is the same for a small desk murti and a big mandir murti. Choose the size by your shelf and how you will do pooja. A big brass murti is heavy, so place it on a strong, flat base.

So next time you pick a Ganesh idol, stand in front of it and look at the tip of the trunk. If it turns towards your right hand, you have the left trunk Ganesh that most homes keep.
